This is a paper I first researched in conjunction with my work in the Liberal Studies program at the University of Oklahoma back in the 1990's. I have recently revised it in order to use it as the basis for some 'talks' I have been asked to give. There is a longer, more annotated version, but this one is a quicker and (I hope) more interesting read.
